Tone deaf? Unlikely says doctor behind BBC’s ‘Musicality test’ - posted: 18.1.2011

The BBC is attempting to find out the musical abilities of the nation with its new ‘Musicality test’, and to prove that many of us have more ability than we may think. ‘A very small proportion of the population is truly tone deaf,’ says Dr Daniel Mullensiefen of Goldsmiths University, London, co-creator of the test. Instead, many people simply lack confidence and practice, particularly if their perceived inability to carry a tune was criticised during childhood.

There is no singing involved in the BBC test, just the tapping of beats and sorting clips of music by genre. You can read the article in full, and take the Musicality test yourself, at www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-12127843.
