About us

Scottish Culture & Traditions is run by people who love tradition and want to help everyone else appreciate the cultural heritage of Scotland.

Mission

Our mission is to promote awareness and growth of Scottish traditional music, song and dance, and to do so in a way which brings enjoyment, encouragement, enthusiasm and a sense of community.

In the beginning ...

In 1997, two local enthusiastic musicians came up with the idea to run a series of evening classes in Scottish traditional music to fulfil the demand for adults to learn and take forward Scottish traditional music instrumental tuition. From small beginnings, SC&T grew over the years with peak numbers of over 300 adults attending over 30 weekly classes. This programme has developed over time to include workshops, public performances, festivals, international exchanges and a successful youth programme.

Classes were initially run in facilities belonging to Aberdeen City Council such as the Rosemount Centre and Harlaw Academy. However, the University of Aberdeen is now our ‘home’, with the vast majority of our activities taking place at the MacRobert Building. Along with the University of Aberdeen, we now work closely with over 20 local organisations and companies who support the running of both the adult and youth programme. These include educational institutions, commercial organisations and local authorities.

SC&T Youth

We launched our SC&T Youth Project in 2019, led by by two enthusiastic young professional musicians. This youth-centered programme has grown from a small weekly group and a Youth Camp to now include 6 strands of activities which have been shaped and designed with strong input from the young people themselves.

SC&T Youth extends our mission to young people aged 6-26 in the North East of Scotland to provide a year round free programme of exciting, accessible and inclusive opportunities for youth to connect with Scottish traditional music, catering to participants of all abilities from beginners to advanced players.

We estimate we have reached almost 5,000 individuals and audiences throughout 2023 – 24. Looking forward to our plan for 2025 – 2028 we intend to continue and build upon our commitment, desire and enthusiasm to sustain and grow the youth programme to benefit the young people in the North East of Scotland and beyond.
